Padmasambhava ("Born from a Lotus"), also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru), was a tantric Buddhist Vajra master from India who may have taught Vajrayana in Tibet. He was later viewed as a central figure in the process of spreading Buddhism to Tibet. According to early Tibetan scriptures, he helped to construct the first Buddhist monastery in Tibet, Samye Monastery and was a founding figure for the Nyingma school, the oldest of four major schools of Tibetan Buddhism.
